O2 - A Leader in Telecommunications

O2 is a leading pan-European telecommunications firm that has operations in the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Isle of Man and Slovakia.

A Short History

Back in 17th of November 2001, mobile communications businesses which were a part of British Telecommunications were divided into several key companies. This took place in order to strengthen its shareholders' position as a response to the declining estimated value of the telecommunications industry as a whole back in later parts of the year 1990.

The subsidiaries which were among the split are BT Cellnet (Telefónica O2 United Kingdom), Viag Interkom, Esat Digifone, Telfort, Manx Telecom in the Isle of Man as well as O2 Asia and O2 Online. The "O2 Online" subsidiary covers the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands. It was rebranded as the "O2 Active" service later on.

The World's Busiest Arena is Found in London

The O2 Arena is an indoor event structure which is located in South East London at the Greenwich peninsula. It is able to accommodate up to 23,000 people depending on the type of event and is among the Europe's largest indoor arenas. The O2 Arena took the title of "World's Busiest Arena" away from the Manchester Evening News Arena which has held the position consistently since 2001.

Building the arena spanned four years (2003 to 2007). The arena was constructed roof first due to the fact that it could only be made on the ground and then lifted while the arena's support structure was built around it.

To accommodate different events, the seating inside the arena may be moved around and customized, much like the MEN Arena located in Manchester. The surface of the arena's ground could also be tailored into a basketball court, an ice rink, formal event venue, exhibition area as well as a concert venue.

In order to become a world-class concert venue, U2's sound manager Joe O'Herlihy worked closely with the arena's engineers in order to minimize the echo with the use of seating positions as well as the implementation of sound absorbing measures on the roof. Even though the arena is only open for seven months in a year, it has become synonymous with sold act shows from major act residencies such as Britney Spears who sold out a total of 8 nights back in June 2009 as well as Pink's 5 sellout dates for her Funhouse Tour.

Plans for 2010

Several new projects were unveiled at the 2010 Mobile World Congress. The Movistar Haiku Project is among those that were showcased and it allows O2 subscribers to implement mobile capabilities like music, images, videos, micro payment systems to their own mobile ads. This is aimed to encourage users to interact in real-time and give them a means to advertise to their friends or to people in a certain location for a pre-specified amount of time.

Another service featured is the 3G Box project. It gives clients unlimited storage by making use of an online data storage system. This gives a means for users to secure their data and be able to recover it even if the physical storage medium is lost. It also allows their clients to view uploaded content such as music and videos via web streaming and also share it with their contacts.
